Paperback/Softcover Book Design

Paperback/Softcover Book Design
This is the first design of 2 in an assignment where we were instructed to design both a paperback and high-end hardcover version of the same book. I chose to design covers for The Princess & The Goblin by George MacDonald since it is credited among C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien's major inspirations and is extremely underrated.

I began the cover by designing the illustration on Procreate and later transferred it over to Photoshop to combine with the typography layout I had created on Illustrator. The interior layout was done entirely on InDesign and all mockups were created using Photoshop.

The main purpose of the paperback design was for it to pop-off the shelf and appeal to a younger audience, so I made sure to use bright, eye-catching colors and a legible, fun typeface. In addition, the blurb on the back gives extra information and the interior is more simple than the hardcover design. The final design would certainly fit in with classic paperback children's or middle-grade novels at any bookstore, making it (in my opinion) a successful design.
